All About Customer Relationship Management and Data—Guest interview with Brandon R. Drake
As a somatic therapist in San Francisco, I enjoy the unique mix of technology and people that the city provides. As our world goes more and more online and we chase new technological advantages, it is important to make sure our technology is working for us by making our lives better. Technology can be extremely powerful and I appreciate those that keep in mind people and humanity while advancing said technology. I had the opportunity to interview Brandon R. Drake, who works as a customer relationship management consultant. Not only does Brandon work on technology that makes business owners lives easier, he centers relationships at the heart of all he does. As a therapist who works in attachment theory and believes connecting with each other is an essential part of life, I enjoy seeing others in different fields who do the same. Please read on to find out more about CRM and data and other insights from Brandon.
1. Can you explain what Customer Relationship Management is (for us non‑tech‑savvy people)?
Customer Relationship Management, or CRM, is simply a structured way to keep track of the people your business serves. Think of it as a digital memory that helps you remember conversations, commitments, preferences, and the small details that make relationships meaningful. A CRM organizes your contacts, your follow‑ups, and your communication so you can stay connected without feeling overwhelmed. It's not about technology replacing human connection. It's about technology supporting it so you can show up consistently for the people who matter.
Why is it important to know about data — how does this help us in business and in life?
Data is just information. When you understand how to use it, you make better decisions with less stress. In business, data helps you see patterns, understand what's working, and identify where people may need more support. In life, data helps you stay organized, reduce mental clutter, and make choices based on clarity instead of guesswork. Good data doesn't replace intuition. It strengthens it.
When is it a good idea to meet with a Customer Relationship Management consultant?
It's a great time to meet with a CRM consultant when your business feels scattered, when you're losing track of conversations, or when you know you could serve people better if your systems were more organized. If you're growing, overwhelmed, or simply ready to work smarter instead of harder, a CRM consultant can help you build structure that supports your relationships and your time.
Why did you choose to be a Customer Relationship Management consultant?
I chose CRM because it sits at the intersection of two things I care deeply about: people and technology. In my corporate life, I was stuck doing data work without any human connection. CRM consulting lets me combine strategy, organization, and relationship‑building in a way that genuinely helps people. I love showing business owners how technology can free them to be more human, more present, and more effective.
What kind of services do you provide?
I help businesses build CRM systems that strengthen relationships and make day‑to‑day operations feel smoother and more organized. My services include CRM setup, workflow automation, data cleanup, system optimization, systems integration, and ongoing support.
A big part of that support is meeting with you regularly to answer questions and make sure your system continues to fit your business as it grows. I also create a fully customized video training library for every client, not generic templates, but step‑by‑step videos tailored specifically to the CRM I built for you. These videos walk through each feature from a simple, user‑friendly perspective.
This becomes incredibly valuable over time. When you hire new team members, you don't have to train each person from scratch or worry about explaining how the CRM works. Your personalized training library does the teaching for you, saving you hours and ensuring everyone learns the system the same way. My goal is to help you feel confident, organized, and fully in control of your business relationships, even when I'm not in the room.
Do you have a specific approach when working with clients?
Yes. My approach is relationship‑first and clarity‑driven. I start by understanding how your business works, how you communicate, and what your clients need from you. Then I design a CRM system that supports those human interactions. I keep the process simple, collaborative, and easy to understand. My goal is to make technology feel like a helpful teammate, not a source of stress.
Why is the relationship aspect important when working with data?
Data only matters when it helps you serve people better. A CRM is not just a database. It's a relationship tool. When you connect data to real human needs, you create systems that help you remember people, follow through on commitments, and build trust. The relationship is the heart. The data is the support system that keeps everything running smoothly.
What can a client expect to leave with after working with you?
Clients leave with a CRM system that feels clear, organized, and tailored to how they naturally work. They gain confidence, structure, and a sense of relief knowing their business relationships are supported by a system that won't let anything slip through the cracks. Most importantly, they leave with more time and more mental space to focus on the parts of their business they love.
How long have you been working as a Customer Relationship Management consultant?
I've been a CRM consultant for seven years, helping service‑based professionals build systems that support growth, clarity, and stronger relationships.
Who are your favorite types of clients to work with?
I love working with relationship‑driven business owners. These are people who genuinely care about their clients and want their systems to reflect that. Coaches, consultants, wellness professionals, and service‑based entrepreneurs, small, and medium sized businesses tend to thrive with CRM support because they value connection and want their technology to help them show up consistently.
What do you wish more people knew about CRM?
I wish more people knew that CRM is not about being "techy." It's about being intentional. A CRM is simply a tool that helps you stay organized, follow through, and build trust. It's not complicated when it's set up correctly. In fact, it often becomes one of the most calming and empowering parts of a business.

What's one fun thing about you that most people don't know?
Most people are surprised to learn that I absolutely love cooking and traveling. When I travel, I do it in a way that feels completely opposite from how structured I am in business. I buy a one‑way ticket from the United States to another country, then a one‑way ticket from a different country back home, and I figure out everything in between by talking to locals. I follow their recommendations, eat where they eat, explore the places they love, and let the adventure unfold naturally.
In my work life I am extremely organized. I rely on routines, early mornings, and structured habits because they help me stay focused and deliver high‑quality work for my clients. But when I travel, I let all of that go. I freestyle the entire experience and enjoy the excitement of not knowing what comes next. It is my version of perfect balance. Structure keeps my business running smoothly, and unplanned adventure keeps my life fun, creative, and full of new stories.
It is a fun mix of discipline and spontaneity, and most people don't expect that from someone who builds organized CRMs for a living.
